GX1 quick start

Prev Next

This guide takes the operator from unboxing GX1 to a first scan. Each step links to the full article for more detail.

What you need

  • The GX1 kit (GX1, batteries, charger, backpack harness, Quick Mount, hard case, supported handheld mount, SSD).

  • An Android  tablet or mobile running the latest Commander app.

  • A Windows workstation with Aura installed for processing scan data.

  • For RTK corrections: an active SIM card with a mobile data plan, installed in the GX1 SIM slot.

  • About an hour for the first set-up, excluding battery charge time.

Contact your local Emesent reseller or Emesent directly for assistance choosing the best SIM.

Step 1: Charge a battery

GX1 ships with three batteries, each providing approximately one hour of scan time. Charge at least one before starting.

  1. Connect the dual-bay charger to power.

  2. Insert a battery into one of the bays.

  3. Wait approximately 2 hours for a full charge.

For the full procedure, see Charge GX1 batteries.

Step 2: Install the battery

  1. Pinch and remove the Battery Bay Door on GX1.

  2. Slide a charged battery in, contacts down, with the Battery Removal Tab at the top.

  3. Replace the Battery Bay Door.

For the full procedure, see Install and remove GX1 batteries.

Step 3: Power on GX1

  1. Press and hold the Power Button for 2 to 3 seconds until the Status Indicator Lights illuminate.

  2. Wait approximately 1 minute for GX1 to complete startup. The status indicator ring pulses white during startup, then slow-pulses blue and plays the startup sound when the GX1 has finished booting and Wi-Fi is available.

For the full procedure, see Power GX1 on and off. For the ring states, see GX1 status indicator ring.

Step 4: Connect Commander to GX1

  1. On the Android device, open the Wi-Fi settings.

  2. Join the network named GX1_<serial>, where <serial> is the GX1 serial number.

  3. Enter the Wi-Fi password. On first connection, use the default Wi-Fi password, hovermap. After initial setup, use the previously set password.

  4. Open Commander. Commander automatically connects to GX1 over the GX1 Wi-Fi network.

For the full procedure, see Connect GX1 to Commander.

Step 5: Mount GX1

Pick the mount that fits the job and follow its setup article:

Step 6: Run a first scan

  1. When Commander connects to GX1, it shows the mission splash page. Choose the Mapping Mission tile.

  2. Configure GNSS settings if applicable.

  3. Enter a scan name, then select Continue.

  4. Select Start Scan and wait for the pre-scan checks to complete (20 to 30 seconds).

  5. Walk the scan path. Move smoothly, avoid rapid rotation, and revisit the starting point at the end so the trajectory closes.

  6. In Commander, select Stop Scan.

For the full procedure and scan technique guidance, see Start a GX1 scan in Commander and GX1 scanning techniques.

Step 7: Offload and process

  1. Connect the supplied SSD to the GX1, with Commander open and connected.

  2. Authorize the SSD in the Commander popup. The GX1 then offloads the scan data to the SSD automatically. See Offload GX1 scan data.

  3. Connect the SSD to the workstation, then open Aura and process the scan. See Process GX1 scan data.
