Using the Survey Pole

Prev Next

This article gives guidance on holding and carrying the GX1 on a survey pole during a scan, for safe and comfortable scanning that protects the unit. Set up the pole and attach the GX1 first, see Setup Survey Pole.

General handling

Ensure all the lock sections on the pole are tight and locked so the pole cannot collapse.

  • Set the survey pole height so the GX1 cameras are at roughly eye level.

  • When extending the pole before the GX1 is fitted, stop just below head height, as the GX1 adds height once attached.

  • Hold the pole securely with both hands.

  • Keep the GX1 20 cm clear of the head and body.

  • Keep the field of view of the cameras and LiDAR in mind (see GX1 field of view).

  • Avoid fully extending the pole except when reaching a specific area, as it becomes difficult to control at that length.

Standard hold

The default hold for moving and scanning.

  • Rest the pole just above shoulder height.

  • For comfort, hold the pole fairly close to the body to reduce strain. The most comfortable position depends on the operator's height and build.

Reaching hold

For scanning areas the standard hold can't reach, such as low or awkward spots.

  • Lower and angle the pole so the GX1 points toward the target area.

  • Grip the pole around the Locking Lever on the Quick Mount for better control.

  • Keep both hands a comfortable distance apart to steady the pole.

Resting hold

Holding the pole in one place to build up point density or to rest during a long scan.

  • Stand the pole vertically over an area and keep a firm grip while holding.

Avoid impact when lowering the pole. Shock from hard surfaces such as concrete or rock may compromise the GX1. Where possible, rest the pole on soft ground such as soil or grass.
