Use the First-person and Third-person viewport views

Prev Next

This article explains how to switch the Commander viewport to First-person or Third-person view and when to use each view during an active scan. These views are designed to give operators real-time spatial awareness of the area around the Emesent scanner.

What you will need

  • Emesent scanner connected to Commander 2.3 or later

  • An active scan in progress, or a recently loaded scan

Procedure

Step 1: Open the Commander viewport

  1. Connect the Emesent scanner to Commander and start a mapping mission.

  2. Continue through the mission workflow until the Home view is displayed. The live point cloud appears as the scan progresses.

Step 2: Switch to First-person view

  1. Locate the First-person view tile in the Camera Controls area of the viewport.

  2. Tap the First-person view tile.

  3. The viewport locks to the Emesent scanner's current position and orientation. The point cloud is shown from the Emesent scanner's perspective, looking forward along its heading.

Step 3: Switch to Third-person view

  1. Locate the Third-person view tile in the Camera Controls area of the viewport.

  2. Tap the Third-person view tile.

  3. The viewport locks to a position behind and slightly above the Emesent scanner, following its movement as it travels through the scan area.

Step 4: Return to a standard perspective

  1. Tap any of the standard camera controls (3D, Top, Left, or Front) to leave the locked view.

  2. The viewport returns to the selected static perspective and stops tracking the scanners' position.

Outcome

The Commander viewport now follows the scanners' live position and orientation, giving real-time spatial awareness of the surrounding point cloud as the scan progresses. The view can be switched between First-person, Third-person, and the standard camera controls at any time during the scan.

When to use each view

First-person and Third-person views are most useful in operations where the operator needs to monitor what the Emesent scanner is encountering without taking attention off another task, for example driving an LHD through a stope. The views are available to all operators running any Commander-supported mission.

  • First-person view shows what the Emesent scanner sees directly ahead of it. Use this view to identify obstacles in the Emesent scanner's immediate forward path.

  • Third-person view shows the Emesent scanner and its surroundings from behind, similar to a chase camera. Use this view to monitor the Emesent scanner's position relative to walls, ceilings, or other features as it moves through the environment.

  • Standard camera controls (3D, Top, Left, Front) remain the best choice for reviewing scan coverage or inspecting captured data, because they do not move with the Emesent scanner.
