Set the GX1 camera anti-banding frequency

Prev Next

Banding is a pattern of vertical light and dark bands across the images the GX1 camera captures. It appears under mains-powered artificial lighting, which flickers at twice the local supply frequency (approximately 100 Hz in 50 Hz regions and 120 Hz in 60 Hz regions). When the camera exposure is not aligned with this flicker, the bands appear in the captured images. The main effect is reduced image quality; in severe cases, banding can also reduce color accuracy when the images are used to colorize a point cloud. Images captured outdoors or under natural light are not affected.

The GX1 camera Anti banding setting reduces banding by matching the camera exposure to the local lighting frequency. This article explains how to set it. Anti banding prevents banding at capture time but does not remove it from images already captured, so set the correct frequency before scanning and confirm it after moving to a location with a different mains supply.

What you will need

Procedure

Step 1: Identify the local mains frequency

Determine the mains electricity supply frequency for the scan location, using the regional guidance below:

Set anti-banding to

Regions (typical)

50 Hz

Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Europe, and most of Asia and Africa

60 Hz

The United States, Canada, Mexico, and parts of South America

If the supply frequency is unknown, check the local mains supply rating.

In Japan, the mains frequency varies by region: set 50 Hz in eastern Japan (including Tokyo) and 60 Hz in western Japan (including Osaka). Confirm the local supply before scanning.

Step 2: Open the camera settings in Commander

  1. In Commander, open the Options menu.

  2. Select Scanner Settings.

  3. Select Camera.

Step 3: Set the Anti banding frequency

  1. Set the Anti banding toggle to 50 Hz or 60 Hz to match the mains frequency identified in Step 1.

The setting applies to subsequent captures.

Outcome

The GX1 camera Anti banding setting matches the local lighting. Images captured under mains-powered artificial light show minimal banding.
