How to Capture a Remote Validation Dataset

This article explains how to capture an Emesent remote validation dataset.

Use this procedure to provide Emesent with the required data to assess payload performance and calibration stability.

What you will need

  • Hovermap payload and battery sufficiently charged

  • Outdoor, feature-rich environment

  • Safe area to walk a continuous loop

  • Camera or mobile device to record a short reference video or photos

Procedure

Step 1: Select a suitable scan location

Choose an outdoor, feature-rich environment with clear structures such as buildings, walls, or infrastructure.

  • Ensure the area allows for continuous walking.

  • Avoid feature-poor environments such as open fields or empty corridors.

  • Confirm it is safe to operate handheld equipment.

Step 2: Capture the validation scan

Perform a handheld closed-loop scan, beginning and ending in the same location.

  • Maintain continuous walking throughout the scan.

  • Target a duration of approximately two minutes.

  • Include flat surfaces at multiple distances.

  • Collect data near the scanner’s maximum range where possible.

Expected result: A complete scan with varied geometry and sufficient environmental features.

Step 3: Record reference media

Capture a short video or take photos of the scan environment.

  • Show the general path taken during the scan.

  • Ensure key structures and surfaces are visible.

Expected result: Visual context that supports engineering review of the dataset.

Outcome

After completing these steps, you will have a validation dataset ready for submission to Emesent to support remote assessment.

Additional information

  • Datasets that do not meet these requirements may need to be re-captured before assessment.

  • If your aircraft was involved in an incident during Autonomous or Pilot Assist flight, submit an Aircraft Incident Report instead of performing this procedure.

  • For guidance on submitting your dataset, see Hovermap Remote Validation FAQ.
