This article describes the network interfaces and services that the GX1 exposes in its factory default state, what each interface is for, and how the device fits into the surrounding network.
What is it?
The GX1 exposes four network interfaces or services in its factory default configuration, each with a specific purpose and scope.
Mobile data
A mobile data interface connects to a cellular network through a user-supplied SIM card. It is used only for real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning, not for general internet access, telemetry, or remote control.
WiFi access point
The GX1 broadcasts a WiFi access point that the Commander application connects to. The SSID uses the pattern GX1_<serial>, where <serial> is the serial number of the GX1.
Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
Supported WiFi standards | 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac / ax |
Authentication | WPA3-Personal |
Unsupported authentication | WPA2-PSK is not supported |
Web interface
The GX1 provides a web interface. Commander uses this interface to communicate with the scanner over WiFi. The web interface is reachable only when a device is connected to the GX1's WiFi access point.
Diagnostic interface for technical support
Emesent technical support staff use the diagnostic interface to connect to the scanner over WiFi. It is not reachable over the internet and is not used during normal operation.
How it works
Each interface has a defined purpose, access path, and operational scope.
Interface | Purpose | Access path | Required for normal operation? |
|---|---|---|---|
Mobile data | Provide RTK correction data to the scanner | Cellular network via a user-supplied SIM | Only when using RTK |
WiFi access point | Allow Commander to connect to the scanner | Direct WiFi connection from the operator's mobile device | Yes |
Web interface | Allow Commander to communicate with the scanner | Reachable over the GX1's WiFi | Yes |
Diagnostic interface | Allow Emesent technical support to diagnose the scanner | WiFi connection, used by support staff only | No |
The GX1 does not accept inbound connections from the internet. The mobile data interface is outbound only and is restricted to RTK correction traffic.
Common use cases
Operating on a corporate or restricted WiFi network
The GX1 does not need to join a corporate WiFi network. Commander connects directly to the GX1's own access point, forming a local network independent of the surrounding infrastructure.
Using RTK in the field
When RTK is configured, the GX1 uses mobile data to receive correction data from an NTRIP service. See Configure an NTRIP profile for the setup procedure.
Granting Emesent support diagnostic access
If technical support needs to investigate an issue, staff connect to the GX1 over WiFi in person, with permission, using the diagnostic interface.
Important considerations
The WiFi access point uses WPA3-Personal authentication. Devices that support only WPA2-PSK cannot connect.
