This FAQ explains how licensing works in Aura. It covers core concepts, the Concurrent User Licensing model, system requirements, common troubleshooting steps, and a glossary of key terms.

Use it to understand how processing seats, modules, and user accounts work, and to resolve common login or processing issues.

Core concepts

What is a license?

A license grants permission to use Aura's processing features. Each license includes one or more modules, which enable specific functionality such as SLAM processing or RTK corrections.

What is a processing seat?

A seat is a unit of access to Aura's processing capabilities. Seats can be assigned to multiple users within an organisation, with one user processing at a time.

What is a module?

Modules are specific functional components within Aura. Licenses may include access to one or more of the following modules:

Allows visualisation of changes between two scans of the same tunnel area.

Licensing model

What is Concurrent User Licensing?

Concurrent User Licensing is the model used in Aura 2.0 and later. It replaces hardware dongles with account-based access. Organisations are allocated a pool of processing seats, which can be shared across machines and locations.

What are the benefits of Concurrent User Licensing?

  • Greater flexibility. Process data on any compatible machine from any location.

  • Faster deployment. Start processing immediately once logged in.

  • Reduced downtime. No risk of lost or damaged dongles.

  • Streamlined management. License changes are applied automatically, with no file exchanges required.

How are processing seats managed?

  • Organisations receive seats based on their license entitlements.

  • Each seat can be shared by up to 10 active users, with one user able to process at a time.

  • If all seats are in use, additional users must wait until one becomes available.

Example:

  • 2 seats → up to 20 registered users, with 2 users processing at the same time.

  • 1 seat → up to 10 registered users, with 1 user processing at a time.

How users log in to Aura:

Each user logs in with a unique email and password. Seats are automatically checked out when processing begins and returned when processing ends.

Can Aura be used offline?

Yes. A seat can be manually checked out for 1 to 14 days to enable offline processing. Processing is always performed locally; internet access is only required for login and seat management.

Requirements and compatibility

What is required to use Concurrent User Licensing?

  • Aura 2.0 or later.

  • An active Emesent License (excluding Hovermap 100 systems).

  • Internet access for login and license management.

Which Emesent scanners support Concurrent User Licensing?

  • Supported: Hovermap ST and ST-X.

  • Not supported: Hovermap 100.

Can hardware dongles still be used with Aura?

With the release of Aura 2.0, licensing has moved to Concurrent User Licensing. Hardware dongles are not supported in Aura 2.0 or later.

For users running an earlier version of Aura (latest pre-2.0 release: 1.10.2), existing dongles continue to function until expiry.

Are my Emesent Client Portal and Aura logins the same?

No. The Emesent Client Portal account is not the same as the Emesent account for Aura 2.0 and above.

  • Emesent Client Portal account: used to access invoices, order history, and support cases.

  • Emesent account: used to log in to Aura 2.0 and above under Concurrent User Licensing. This account is managed by the organisation's license administrator through the Emesent User Management portal.

Troubleshooting

Why can't I log in to Aura?

Cause:

  • Incorrect email or password.

  • No active internet connection.

  • User account not yet registered in Emesent User Management.

Solution:

  • Re-enter the email and password carefully.

  • Ensure an active internet connection is available.

  • Confirm with the organisation's Emesent administrator that the account is registered in the company's system.

  • Contact Emesent using the Emesent User Management Setup form if the local administrator cannot be located.

Why am I unable to process even though I am logged in?

Cause:

  • All available seats are already in use.

  • The organisation may not have enough seats to support current demand.

Solution:

  • Check the number of available seats in Aura under License Details in the User Profile menu.

  • Wait until a seat becomes available.

  • If capacity issues continue, ask the administrator to review whether additional seats are required.

Why can't I process offline?

Cause:

  • A seat was not manually checked out before going offline.

  • The manual checkout period has expired.

Solution:

  • Connect to the internet and manually check out a seat before going offline.

  • Seats can be checked out for 1 to 14 days. If the period has expired, reconnect to the internet to renew.

What happens when my Aura license expires?

Once an Aura license expires, new data can no longer be processed. Previously processed data remains accessible and can still be viewed within Aura.

If a subscription has expired or is approaching renewal, contact Emesent or an Emesent partner as soon as possible to avoid interruption to operations.
