Using Commander

Prev Next

Emesent Commander is the Android app that is the interface to Emesent scanners, on a tablet or a smartphone. Operators use Commander to configure the scanner, and to plan, run, and monitor missions.

Connect and configure

Install and set up Commander with Commander Getting Started, then connect it to Hovermap or GX1. The Options menu gives access to the app functions and settings. In the Options menu, Scanner settings sets the audio volume, RTK corrections, and camera anti-banding frequency.

Plan the mission

Plan the scan before going to site. Check the Hovermap operating limitations, and see Scenarios for the recommended techniques in common environments, such as stopes, shafts, bridges, and buildings.

Set up the mission

On the landing page, select a Mapping, Pilot Assist, or Autonomous mission. The mission workflow then goes through the pre-mission checks, connectivity, pre-mission settings, and scan setup, so the system is correctly configured before data collection starts.

Keep the device unlocked during a mission. If the device locks, the app can go into sleep mode and the live point cloud can have gaps. Hovermap continues to capture data.

Start the mission

For a Pilot Assist or Autonomous mission, arm the drone and take off from Commander. In an Autonomous mission, Hovermap runs Explore and Waypoint tasks in sequence. To take control at any time, switch to Pilot Assist. At the end of the mission, use Return to Home, then land and disarm the drone. For the full procedure, see How to perform a mission (Mapping and Autonomy).

Monitor the mission

The main view shows the live point cloud, and the header bar shows the mission status and system indicators. Commander also shows the RTK status and, for DJI drones, the drone telemetry on a map. Other people can watch the mission on their own device in Observer mode.

Finish and process the scan

When the robot is on the ground and disarmed, select Stop Scan. Then transfer the scan data and process it. Onboard processing takes about 80 seconds for a 15-minute mission, against about 20 minutes in Aura, but the point cloud has a lower resolution. To choose a method, see Aura and Hovermap onboard processing comparison.
